Frequently Asked Questions

Will I save money? How much will this cost? +

Yes. You will reduce your monthly electric bill with Solar Credits. Each month the respective solar farm will advise your utility company of the amount of solar electricity production to be allocated to your bill from the solar project. Your utility will then issue and place on your bill the Solar Credits generated by the solar project. You will pay as little as 90% of the actual cost of the Solar Credits generated by the solar farm(s). For example, you will pay as little as 90 cents for every $1 of solar power generated by the solar farm(s) on your behalf.

Am I required to switch electricity providers? +

No. Your utility, or your current alternative electricity supplier, will continue to supply and/or deliver electricity to you without any interruption to your service.

What if I live in a shady area? +

You will continue to receive your electricity through your utility provider. With Community Solar, you will not install solar panels on your property, so there is no need to worry about the location of your residence with respect to shade. The local solar farms will be hosting solar panels and producing solar energy. Your home's location and characteristics won't impact the amount of solar energy produced at the respective local solar farm(s).

Community Solar sounds too good to be true. How I do know that this isn't a scam? +

Community Solar is not a scam! Community Solar was created by New York State Energy Research & Development Authority ("NYSERDA") and overseen by the New York Public Service Commission in efforts to allow for all consumers to have the ability to support solar energy initiatives. Visit NYSERDA’s website at www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Programs/NY-Sun/Solar-for-Your-Home/Community-Solar to learn more.

What is Community Solar? +

Community Solar is a state-specific government incentive program where electric supply customers virtually subscribe to receive solar energy credits from a solar farm located within their utility. An estimated 85% of U.S. residents can neither own nor lease rooftop solar panels due to their roofs being physically unsuitable for solar energy production and/or due to living in a multi-family housing unit. Customers purchase these credits at a discount to its face value, and the credits are then used to offset a portion of their electric bill, up to 100%.

What is Solar Simplified? +

What happens if I move? +

If you are moving within your utility, you may be eligible to take your solar subscription service with you or you may cancel at no cost at any time.

Why am I receiving two bills? +

You will receive one bill from your respective local solar farm, in which you will pay as little as 90% of the cost for your allotted solar energy production. You will also still continue to receive your electric utility bill with your Solar Credits applied to your bill to offset a portion of your electricity charges.

Will my electricity ever stop? +
